£15,000 for Philippines typhoon disaster
23 December 2011
On the 17th December 2011, a typhoon pounded the southern Philippines, bringing heavy rains and strong winds, which resulted in massive flooding and landslides.
Over 1,000 people were killed and the Philippines government declared a further 1,000 missing. Approximately 338,000 people have been affected by the disaster and over 10,000 homes destroyed.
Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) ravaged the Mindanao area, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that left a horrifying trail of destruction. Most of the dead were asleep in the middle of the night when raging floodwaters pounded their homes from rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 straight hours of heavy rains. Drowning has been identified as the main cause of death. Sendong was the 19th tropical cyclone to lash the Philippines during 2011.
On December 23rd 2011, the President of the Grand Charity approved an immediate emergency grant of £15,000 to the Red Cross, to provide disaster relief across the region.
