Everyman and The Freemasons' Grand Charity - Helping to cross out male cancer

June 2007

In 2004, The Freemasons' Grand Charity pledged £1 million to The Institute of Cancer Research over 10 years.

The Institute runs the Everyman campaign that aims to cross out male cancer by raising awareness of, and funds for research into, prostate and testicular cancer. Along with The Freemasons' Grand Charity, Everyman hleps fund Europe's first and only dedicated male cancer research centre - The Everyman Centre.

Over the last three years Everyman scientists have made many breakthroughs into the causes, prevention, diagnosis and methods of treatment of male cancers. SPecially, researchers are looking into what causes prostate cancer, how it develops and how to distinguish prostate cancers which require treatment from those which do not.

Professor Colin Cooper, holder of The Grand Charity of Freemasons Chair of Molecular Biology, who is leading the research says, "A lot of cancers don't need treating. If we can spot the difference at the time of diagnosis we can change the management of prostate cancer".
