Case Studies: Major Grants
SSAFA: £100,000
SSAFA (The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Forces Help received a grant of £100,000 towards the Helping Heroes and Their Families appeal.
The recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in a rise in the number of families affected by injured or incapacitated returning service men. In addition, many also suffer complex, multiple trauma and neurological problems.
Medical recommendation is that such Service personnel are aided in recovery by having visits from close family and friends. The SSAFA Forces Help appeal aims to provide long-term families' accommodation, a ‘home from home' for troops and their families at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Selly Oak and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. The new centres will alleviate need and provide respite for families and their loved ones as together they make the transition to life back in military service or a new life in the wider community.

The Prince's Trust: £50,000
The Prince’s Trust received a grant of £50,000 to fund the ‘Get into Youth Work’ programme. The programme offers unemployed young people, who are work-ready but who lack vocational skills or experience, the opportunity to benefit from an intensive learning programme which will lead to their first job or further training opportunities in the youth sector. The inspiration for the project came from the number of young people leaving a Prince’s Trust programme and expressing an interest in helping other young people.
The Prince’s Trust helps vulnerable 14-30 year olds overcome barriers to employment, education and training through practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance. The Trust focuses its work in the areas and communities where it can make the most impact and the aim is for young people to leave the Prince’s Trust programmes with recognised qualifications to help them achieve their goals.

The goal of Autism Speaks is to change the future for all those who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. It is committed to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.
Autism Speaks received a grant of £40,000 to help part-fund a new fellowship in autism research at Cardiff University. The fellow will work alongside a new chair of autism research currently being appointed in the School of Psychology. The new appointees will undertake internationally significant research into autism using the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre. Research fellowships provide the necessary resources to support and encourage bright young scientists, who benefit from the mentoring of prominent researchers.
