Masonic Charities
From time to time, The Freemasons' Grand Charity supports overseas charities through grants to the appropriate District Grand Lodge.
District Grand Lodge of Eastern Archipelago - £15,000
The District Grand Lodge of Eastern Archipelago received a grant of £15,000 towards its work for survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (Burma). Almost 85,000 people were killed when Cyclone Nargis devastated the country in May 2008 and recovery from the disaster will be a long-term process.
Through the non-profit organisation Mercy Malaysia, the District Grand Lodge of Eastern Archipelago's Board of Benevolence is supporting the building of three health clinics at Pyinkhayang, Myaugmya and Nadupaw. Mercy Malaysia was active in Myanmar (Burma) prior to Cyclone Nargis and continues to provide support including deploying medical staff and distributing hygiene kits, plastic sheeting and medical supplies.
The support of The Freemasons' Grand Charity for the long-term efforts of the District Grand Lodge was given in addition to an emergency grant of £20,000 to Save the Children, approved in the immediate aftermath of the Cyclone.

District Grand Lodge of Ghana - £10,000
In 2007, the District Grand Lodge of Ghana received a grant of £10,000 towards the purchase of an Electromyogram Machine for the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The machine will be used for the diagnosis and management of patients with nerve and muscle disorders. The machine is the only one of its kind available to public health institutions in Ghana and will help to cut long waiting periods for patients and reduce the need to travel abroad for treatment for people from Korle-Bu and across the entire West African Sub-region.
The Machine was officially handed over to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital by The Grand Master, HRH The Duke of Kent and the District Grand Master, Kow Abaka Quansah, during an official visit by The Grand Master to mark the celebration of 50 years of Ghanaian Independence.
